Genius Day

Genius DayOn Friday, February 23rd students took part in our first ever Johnson Genius Day.  If you have never heard of Genius Hour, it is an idea that stems from a Google initiative where employees are allowed to spend 20% of their workweek on a pet project of their choice. What Google has found is that productivity and creativity for their employees increased drastically. This idea has gained some momentum in schools where students across the country are being given time during the week to explore their own passions. This is an authentic way to get to know students on a more personal level and also put them in the driver's seat of their learning.

Johnson, teachers offered classes that tied to their passions and hobbies to students across all grade levels, K-4. At 8:45, students transitioned to their first of two classes.
Classes included learning to code, bake, play the ukulele, bling out pens and identify animal tracks in nature.  But it was not about the classes being offered. It was about students choosing what they learn about, connecting with adults other than their classroom teacher and connecting with students in different grades or classes.
Throughout the day students were practicing the 4Cs: communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.  Students showed incredible acts of kindness, risk-taking, teamwork, and sharing.  At our whole school assembly this afternoon, several students shared how they made new friends or tried something new.  Click here to check out our YouTube slideshow from Genius Day.

This was a great way to wrap up our week!
